Dr. Muhammad Khalid Masud

Dr. Muhammad Khalid Masud is a distinguished scholar, academic leader, and jurist with an illustrious career dedicated to Islamic research and contemporary thought. He has served as the Director General of the Islamic Research Instituteat the International Islamic University, Islamabad, and was appointed as an Ad Hoc Member of the Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2012.

Previously, Dr. Masud held the position of Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (2004–2010), where he contributed significantly to the interpretation and application of Islamic principles in modern governance.

Dr. Masud earned his PhD in Islamic Studies from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He has also served as the Academic Director of the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) in Leiden, Netherlands, and as a professor at the Islamic Research Institute in Islamabad.

His contributions to academia are extensive, with publications including:

  • Shatibi’s Philosophy of Law (rev. ed. 1995)
  • Iqbal’s Reconstruction of Ijtihad (1995)
  • Islamic Legal Interpretation: The Muftis and their Fatwas (with B. Messick and D. Powers, 1996)
  • Travellers in Faith: Studies of the Tablîghî Jamâ’at as a Transnational Islamic Movement for Faith Renewal (2000)

Dr. Masud has also served as an editor of the journal Islamic Studies, further cementing his legacy as a thought leader in Islamic scholarship and jurisprudence.
